About the Collection

The RISD Museum was founded on the belief that art, artists, and the institutions that support them play pivotal roles in promoting broad civic engagement and creating more open societies.

Established in 1877 as part of a vibrant creative community, the RISD Museum stewards works of art representing diverse cultures from ancient times to the present. They interpret their collection with the focus on the maker and deeply engage with art and artists, presenting ideas and perspectives that can be inspiring and complex.

The Rhode Island Schoold of Design Art Museum collection currently contains more than 100,000 works of art and design dating from ancient times to today.

“Obama White House”, 2010 (2019.22), was acquired by the RISD Museum in 2018, as part of a major gift by the Kohler Foundation. The piece was selected for its correlation with the Museum’s presentation of complex ideas, in this facet a political focus which could be interpreted as either inspiring or challenging to the public.

The Rhode Island School of Design Museum is located in Providence, RI.
