The Peabody Essex Museum is located in Salem, Massachusetts. It was founded as the East India Marine Society in 1799 by a group of sea captains who wanted to display curiosities from around the world. As the oldest continuously operating and collecting museum in the United States, its wide-ranging collection includes more than one million objects covering fine arts, decorative arts, historical artifacts, books, manuscripts, natural history specimens, and historic buildings.
